Input / Output Errors

I've been having issues with I/O (I guess Input/output read errors). Does anyone how, or why this occurs?  It seems to happen on both XP and Windows7 machines, especially when saving files to and from a network drive. I also asked this same question on several tech pages, or blogs including Autodesk Discussion groups and Revit Forums.
